beetle
Found this guy (or girl.. both??) the other day, brought him in and took some pics.. They protest (sounds like screaming) loudly when handled but calm down once on something stable. Not sure what they are called. They are built like a tank and amuse the cats to no end. They occasionally occur on the order of infestation.

California Root Borer
Prioninae Prionini Prionus californicus
Motschulsky, 1845

These long-horned beetles are nocturnal and most active at twilight and before sunrise. The larvae are root feeders and can cause serious damage to oak, madrone, cottonwood and many types of fruit trees including apple, peach, and cherry.

OOOOOoooooOOO!!!!! MAN! That is such a wicked cool pretty and totally funky buggy-wug! Probably a loathsome pest that destroys all sorts of stuff but I'd love to take some pics of something like that. Kudos on the pics, they're absolutely perfect and I LOVE that macro shot of his/her/it's purdy face.

They eat the roots of trees apparently. I was glad I could get em to chill long enough for me to snap some pics. They are harmless it humans, you could probably eat them if you were so inclined.

Just wondering if it was one of those inauspicious little critters or one of those "eat entire forests" varieties.

Damn! This post is locked and I was just about to cross-post these to my own journal. Think you could make it public? I mean, it's not like you're um, *koff* 'fondling' it or anything... *grin*

I should note the top one is an HDR tone compressed image, it was hard to get the light right. You got me to try out HDR it's interesting =)

Oh very nice! Excellent results! I'll download the 1'st and 3'rd when I go in for a shower. Gosh I love 28.8 dialup! :D Oh, and as for eating em, too much gristle(carapace) for me, I'll stick to crickets. Mmmm! Pan-fried crickets! Nice, but what I wouldn't give for a nice juicy Hercules Beetle!

I think of you when I make these posts, I try and keep the thumbnails to small heavily compressed jpg's to make for snappy downloads. They all link to large images for those that are interested in a larger view.

Gwarsh, thanks! Just cross-posted and about to head out. This time I've got targets, do those bluebell pics really nicely, great possibilities there.
