CPU Price/Performace
X4 (AMD)
q qx i7 (Intel)

Looks like AMD (X4 9600) is still king of the hill when it comes to price vs performance (only looking at floating point performance as it is what I am most concerned with)

The Motherboard prices are just the cheapest MB's I could find for that platform.
All prices are from pricewatch.

These numbers really don't mean that much but is meant as a guideline to determine a starting point when building a system.

I just hope that AMD's motherboards have improved. I have built about 5 AMD machines in the last 10 years and the last 3 I could never get to be stable. I wasn't using shit components either, I just would get random lock ups and crashes. Ever since then, I've been mostly on Intel and haven't looked back.

I have ran mostly AMD over the years and have had similar issues. Mostly to do with peripheral devices like firewire or IDE controllers. AMD has always had good bang for the buck, but just like everything else you get what you pay for. My current system is a x4 9500. Everything in the system is budget except the graphics card and power supply and has been very good to me. It does crash occasionally and that bug me. But everything works on it so I am happy enough. My older system was a AMD as well, a 4200+. That system was solid as a rock, it's what I used to render that giant fractal poster from a while back. It basically ran full tilt for about 6 months stable, with windows even. It had other issues although, firewire devices would crash the system, as well as using the EIDE bus, luckily it has SATA as well and is stable with that. I have a laptop with a intel proc that I really like and also a intel box at work but it crashes constantly, I think it has a jacked up windows install. I'm really miffed by the overall poor quality of pc hardware these days. Even the macs are plagued by odd hardware issues. My Amiag's from 1990 still work today. I have pc boxes from the late 90's that are really solid, it's to bad they are 200mhz. If I had money to burn I would just get server hardware and such. About the only thing I do go and spend the extra money on is HD's. I really like the NS series hd's from seagate.

Hell, fuck the price...gimmie that 72778 Whetstone i7 965, I mean daaaaaamn... ^.^

I paid over a grand for my current QX6800, I would be okay with dropping a grand on an i7.

For single thread performance it is amazingly fast, you pay for that obviously but still yeah holly shit the i series is fast. Also they overclock well

Core i7 920 @ 3.8 GHz 78821 Whetstones
AMD X4 940 @ 3.64 GHz 43231 Whetstones
